ABOUT US
Welcome to Pennant Books, a division of Pennant Publishing
Ltd. Registered in 2004, Pennant Books is the
brainchild of bestselling author Cass Pennant in
partnership with Brighton businessman Laxley
Pennant; it became a directorship of three in
2006 when marketing entrepreneur supreme Paul
Boon was made a shareholder.
Pennant Books was introduced to the book
industry with the launch of our first
publication on 16 November 2005, the
autobiography of previously little-known former
Irish heavyweight boxer
Big Joe Egan. With Joe’s help, we managed to
secure the services of ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson, Joe’s
close friend and former sparring partner, to
attend the first book signing at Books Etc,
Jubilee Place, Canary Wharf, London Docklands.
Tyson also provided the book’s Foreword, in
which he paid tribute to Joe and their enduring
friendship.
Big
Joe Egan broke all sales records for a book
signing on the Wharf, which had previously been
held by the World Cup-winning English rugby
team. The launch brought the Wharf to a
lunchtime standstill as office workers mixed
with British fight fans who turned out in force
to see Joe and Mike, along with a dozen boxing
champions that included such sporting legends as
Frank Bruno, Barry McGuigan, Alan Minter, Steve
Collins, Chris Eubank, Jim Watt and Charlie
Magri.
The signing created huge media interest, which
the company capitalised on with Joe and Mike
sporting sweatshirts emblazoned with the
book-cover imprint and the company name, which
they wore at all media interviews. The launch
event and the book itself was covered in The
Sun, The Mirror, The Daily Star,
The Independent and the Metro, and
featured in most of the Irish press publications including a
four-page feature in The Sunday Times.
The launch received worldwide coverage by BBC
World News and Sky TV, as the book
has seen Joe become a celebrity in his own
right.
Following the success of Big Joe Egan, we have
published several other well-received titles
including
Black Hammers, a fascinating look at
the history of black players in the West Ham
side, featuring frank and open player
interviews;
West Ham Miscellany and
Pompey
Miscellany, essential fans’ guides to the
history of each club incorporating quirky facts,
player quotes and terrace songs;
Divide of the
Steel City, a dual-authored book exploring the
history of Sheffield and the rivalry between
United and Wednesday as viewed from both sides;
and The Ryder Lions, a meticulously researched
history of the GB and Ireland Ryder Cup-winning
side of 1957. Most recently, we have published
The Bridge House, the story of the influential
London music venue as told by Terence Murphy,
the landlord who made it the place to play in
London in the early 80s. Part
autobiography, part music history, with
contributions from the famous bands who played there
and a Foreword by Garry Bushell, it makes
essential reading for any music fan. Towards the end of 2007 a progressive year that gave us two real scoops when beating the pursuing publishing pack to be first out and on the bookshelfs with The Lewis Hamilton Story. The second scoop was the timing of Pariah: Colin Stagg, the man wrongly charged with the Wimbledon Common murder. We published the day a convicted sex killer was charged with the murder and launched ourselves as a true crime list publisher.
The company continues to go from strength to
strength, and we believe our success lies in the
faith and support we invest in each title we
publish and with the care and encouragement we
give to each of our authors, all of whom are
passionate and extremely knowledgeable about
their subjects. The quality of the content of
our books is matched by our high production
values, which ensures that our books will stand
the test of time.
