| Synopsis |
BIG JOE EGAN, THE HEART OF A LION AMIABLE DUBLINER WHO COULD HAVE BEEN A WORLD CONTENDER.
Ireland’s best amateur boxing heavyweight is colourful Dubliner Big Joe Egan who is a former Golden Gloves champion. In a long illustrious career that included fights against eventual world champions of the calibre of greats like Lennox Lewis, Steve Collins, Bruce Seldon. Big Joe as he was affectionately known never did bridge that gap of a top ranked amateur to survive the pro-ranks of boxing’s cruel jungle. Why and the reason it never really happened is a story of a big affable Irishman who never got the even rub of the green.
A four year spell in New York saw the promising teenager invited to train, spar and live at Mike Tyson’s training camp in the Catskill Mountains with the late great Cus D’Amato. Joe became like a brother to the future world champion Tyson and can tell of a fascinating insight to the real Mike Tyson who once said of Joe after a particular vicious sparring session he was the toughest white man on the planet.
Joe’s personal life came out in all the glare of the world press when dumped by his beautiful blonde fiancée, who in turn became the long term lover of the River Dance multi-millionaire hoofer Michael Flatley. The two men became love rivals for attention of Lisa Murphy and with both men having a love of boxing, news of their feud appeared in the press quoting Lord of the Ring v Lord of the Dance in a showdown.
Next up was an opportunity to run a pub business in the Irish community of Birmingham that saw him shot by armed men from an organised protection racket. The ensuing battle found the boxer charged with attempted murder. Later dropped only to see a further downward spiral when convicted and sent to prison for a luxury car ringing scam run from the premises of his pub.
After 12 years out of the ring Joe decided to return to make his boxing comeback after contacting his friend Mike Tyson. Big Joe Egan the toughest white man on the planet was back. |

This book runined by Girlfriends Xmas for 2006, as I just could not put down. Having briefly met the legend that is Joe Egan recently, I was fascinated to read about his life, and am so glad that I did. Joe recalls events with unnering accuracy and emotion, the stories about Mike Tyson and of The Lyndhurst pub, are the things films are made of. Come on Joe, lets see you in Hollywood soon.
Buy this, you won't regret it.

My heart and mind have been captured! I experienced the entire spectrum of emotions any individual could possibly endure, whilst being totally engrossed. Fiction doesn't come near to the realities contained within Joe's Story.
My utmost respect to the author for his very obvious backbone, his strength of character as was witnessed, but most importantly for his ability to hold my attention for an uninterrupted 6 hours. EXCELLENT & EXHILERATING!!!

Great read , I could not put it down once I started to read it . Not only does the reader get an insight into the real Mike Tyson but also into one of the most interesting boxing personalities I have had the good fortune to meet . Some great stories about Joe's rise through the amateur ranks , the unbelievable treatment he received from the Irish Boxing Board and his ultimate decision to quit through injury only to come back in his late 30's for one last hurrah plus an insight into his life outside of boxing . Great !

It’s not often that you pick up a book and read it from start to finish without a break. This was the case with this truly remarkable life story, one of the best books I’ve read in years.
