AN IN-DEPTH HISTORY OF THE HOSTILITY BETWEEN FANS OF SHEFFIELD’S TWO FOOTBALL TEAMS

In the city of Sheffield its simple you are either red or blue, United or Wednesday, a middle ground does not exist in the Steel City.

Why do the two clubs supporters hate each other with such a passion? In the 60’s fans from both teams used to go to Hillsborough one week then Bramell Lane the following week. Something changed in the 70’s; as we entered a new era of mass brawls on the terraces. Late 80’s the football casuals ended the era of the 70’s boot boys as it was now the turn of the firms to clash on the fields of hate. Today tit for tat reprisals occur on a regular basis within local communities in a continuing feud that has split families and friendships which at times has carried through to the players and staff who know just how much the winning or not losing this fixture means to their supporters. A city thats as divided as ever when it comes to its football teams.
